At Fortinet Accelerate 2026 in Las Vegas, Fortinet introduced FortiOS 8.0, the latest release of the operating system powering the Fortinet Security Fabric. After more than 25 years of innovation at the intersection of networking and security, this release marks a significant new step: a unified platform that helps organizations safely embrace AI, simplify operations, and consistently enforce protection across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
Securing AI starts with visibility
The adoption of generative AI is accelerating rapidly, yet the security implications are still frequently underestimated in practice. FortiOS 8.0 introduces a range of new capabilities that help organizations maintain control over how AI is used across their networks.
Through FortiView, security teams gain real-time insight into which AI applications and services are active, and can immediately distinguish between sanctioned and unsanctioned tools. Complementing this, AI-aware application control allows approved generative AI tools while blocking risky actions that could expose sensitive data — so employees benefit from the productivity advantages of AI without putting intellectual property or customer data at risk.
New and particularly noteworthy is visibility into Model Context Protocol (MCP) and agent-to-agent (A2A) communication: interactions between AI applications, agents, and tools that traditionally fall outside the view of security teams. FortiOS 8.0 makes this hidden activity visible and manageable. Data loss prevention has also been extended with optical character recognition (OCR), detecting sensitive information embedded in images, scans, and screenshots — a common exfiltration loophole that traditional text-based inspection misses entirely.
SASE moves to the next generation
FortiOS 8.0 also brings significant enhancements to Secure Access Service Edge. The introduction of SASE Outpost allows organizations to extend SASE enforcement closer to users and applications by deploying a SASE point of presence in customer-controlled locations — such as on-premises, in a private data center, or at a co-location facility — while retaining centralized cloud management.
For organizations operating in heavily regulated markets or regions with strict data requirements, the new sovereign SASE deployment options are particularly relevant. A multilayer sovereignty model offers granular control over where log data is retained, where the control plane resides, and whether a fully sovereign deployment within the organization's own data center is required.
FortiOS 8.0 further introduces unified SD-WAN bundles with integrated overlay and underlay connectivity, centralized management, and improved reporting. Multipath IPsec tunnels enhance resilience and performance for critical sites across distributed environments.
Preparing for the post-quantum era
FortiOS 8.0 builds on Fortinet's leadership in quantum-safe security. Post-quantum cryptography is being extended to critical management access paths, including agentless VPN connectivity, using PQC certificates such as ML-DSA for authentication and key establishment.
SSL deep inspection is also strengthened with hybrid key exchange and post-quantum-safe cryptography, bringing threats hidden within encrypted traffic to light without silently downgrading end-to-end encryption. The same quantum-safe protection is made available through the SASE environment, ensuring Fortinet delivers a consistent post-quantum strategy across the entire platform.
A platform built to grow with the business
FortiOS 8.0 is more than a version update. It is an expression of Fortinet's Secure Networking vision: a unified platform that reduces complexity, improves operational efficiency, and embeds future-ready security directly into the network. For organizations advancing digital transformation, AI adoption, and long-term resilience, FortiOS 8.0 provides a scalable foundation built for the demands of tomorrow.
